Sack Them/Government Stealth Tax

sackthemSo as snow causes transport problems around the UK, people are looking for someone to blame and summarily sack. Since it’s a bit hard to punish the weather front that caused it, fingers are again being pointed at transport bosses and the government for failing to expect the unexpected. Of course if tax payer’s money had been spent on preparing for adverse conditions, you can guarantee they would have been lambasted for wasting the cash during the 17 years it didn’t snow. So let’s leave the self congratulating, stealthtaxaccusing and down right stupid idiots to their flaming torches and pitchfork mentality. London was the hardest hit, gentle tourists and as some of you might consider visiting the capital that Monet didn’t seem to like much, I shall now review the “Metro Train” style transport system based on the few I have actually been on.

The world famous London Underground or “Tube” network has been around for dickety years and originally the trains were all steam trains causing various ventilation problems. It was smoky, hot and all a bit weird for the first commuters who had never had a good reason to go below the streets of London before. Things changed with electric trains providing quieter, cleaner transport and the network exploded. Most of the trains were still made of wood, as were the escalators, but that changed after a few fires.

The non-topographical map is generally regarded as a piece of art and quite easy to navigate. However there are a few problems with it. Three stations called Shepard’s Bush?


A regular stations is marked with a neat little bump with it’s name close to it with interchange stations shown as large white circles with a thick black line around it. Stations with appropriate wheelchair access use a similar sized blue circle with a white wheelchair logo in the middle regardless of whether or not it is an interchange station.


This is aesthetically wrong to the eye that is trying to scan quickly along a line to see where the interchange stations are. By all means show where the wheelchair access is, but make the logo bigger, or smaller, or a different shape even!


Services until 24.00 means there’s a 24 o’clock now? For shame tfl, for shame. These are just the ones I’ve spotted while going about my business. I’m sure if I looked hard, I’d see more.
