This is just a quick one, just wanted to point out the lunacy that is the IBIS, billed as being near Amsterdam Central station. I needed a place to stay for one evening in Amsterdam in order to make a connecting flight to South America. I was meeting a friend in Amsterdam for dinner so wanted somewhere near the main station in order to get back to the airport (Schipol) early the next morning. My friend suggested the Central Amsterdam IBIS as I wanted an international chain for my expenses. (James – if you’re reading this – no offence you made your recommendation based on my criteria).
The hotel appears on first glance to be right next door to the station. So after looking it up on the net I had no qualms about booking it. I arrived in Amsterdam in the evening rush hour. I found the hotel easily enough. I checked in as instructed to take the far lift towards the ‘new wing’. Having gone up the lift to the fourth floor I realised the corridor led back towards the station.
To cut a long story short, my hotel room was above a platform at the station, which has to be one of the busiest in Europe. I got back to the hotel at about midnight, and tried to sleep, but was interrupted by the noise of trains running under my bed. The next morning I was woken by the sound of platform announcements at 5:30 am.
If you’re ever in Amsterdam and need a hotel near the station, please don’t choose the IBIS!
